All prospective students must meet the university’s admissions requirements and follow the university’s process for freshman admissions. Interested students should list BICH or GENE when applying. BCBP has no department-specific requirements for undergraduate admission.
Change of Major Requirements
Students who wish to change their major to BICH or GENE must have:
- Completed at least 12 hours at TAMU
- At least an overall GPA of 2.75
- A grade of C or better in all BIOL courses taken
- A grade of B or better in all CHEM and MATH courses taken
- Completed BIOL 111, CHEM 119, and MATH 151 or 171 at the time of application
If you meet the above requirements, you may submit a change of major request in Howdy. Applications received after classes have started will be considered for the following semester. A submitted application does not guarantee acceptance
Double Major in Biochemistry or Genetics
Students whose primary major is not BICH or GENE must meet the below requirements to pursue a double major in BICH or GENE:
- An overall GPA of at least 3.00
- Credit for BIOL 111, BIOL 112, CHEM 119, CHEM 120 and MATH 151 or MATH 171 with a C or better in each course
Students within the department must have an overall GPA of 2.5 to pursue a double major.

Transfer Admissions
Students who wish to transfer from an outside institution should visit the Admissions website for information about applying. Please view the transfer major requirements for Biochemistry or Genetics by visiting the Transfer Course Sheet site linked below and clicking on the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences drop-down button. Applicants are encouraged to complete the additional coursework.
When submitting your application, please be sure to explain why you would like to major in biochemistry or genetics. Each applicant’s record is reviewed by the admissions committee for the Undergraduate Programs.
