We celebrate with Karl Gorzelnik who received a U.S. Senator Phil Gramm Doctoral Fellowship in April 2018. The Senator Phil Gramm fellowship was established to promote, encourage and reward outstanding teaching and research by doctoral students whose command of their respective disciplines exemplifies the meaning of scholar/mentor in the highest sense. Karl is currently a Ph.D. student in Dr. Junjie Zhang's lab and was previously a technician in Dr. Carlos Gonzalez's lab. Dr. Gonzalez encouraged him to pursue his Ph.D. where he has excelled in his research endeavors. One of his nominator's, Dr. Claudia Castillo-Gonzalez writes, "Karl has not only excelled as a researcher, but also as a mentor. He is compassionate, thorough in his explanations and he holds very high expectations. He motivates students to think critically and guides them through the many troubleshooting endeavors that are so challenging in the wet sciences." Pictured with Karl in this photo, is his wife, Keya Mukherjee, who he met at Texas A&M. They have adopted two dogs while fostering many more dogs and cats from local animal shelters.
