Program Details
The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics is home to an inquisitive and diverse community of scholars with a common interest in biochemistry and biophysics. On completing the program, our graduates are equipped to address pressing scientific challenges through the cohesive application of both empirical and theoretical methods. The Ph.D. degree prepares students for a career as a university faculty member or research scientist in a government agency or private sector.
Our PhD students must complete at least 96 credit hours, accumulated through a combination of traditional coursework, journal clubs, and dissertation research.
The final degree plan MUST be approved by all members of the student’s Thesis Committee and should reflect the rigor expected of a doctoral degree.
All students must pass a final comprehensive examination administered by their thesis committee. At the end of the semester in which the exam is given, there are no more than 6 hours of coursework remaining on the degree plan (except 681, 684, 690, 691, and 693).
